A Day Trip to Kirovsk —
the Heart of the Khibiny Mountains
Kirovsk is the Arctic with a different character. There is no ocean here, but there are real mountains: the Khibiny rise a kilometre above the polar region, and the cable car carries you up to the clouds, where the whole massif lies spread out below you.
In one full day you will ride up Mount Aikuaivenchorr, take in a bird's-eye panorama of the Khibiny, visit the wild mountain lake Maly Vudyavr, discover the treasures of the earth at the Stone Museum and end the day in the magical 'Enchanted Forest' art park, where the trees glow and mysterious music drifts through the woods.
Mountains, minerals millions of years old and the evening magic of an Arctic forest — the Khibiny are waiting.
What awaits you
Tour programme
- From the 'Plato' viewing platform a panorama opens over the entire Khibiny massif, the town of Kirovsk and the lake below.
- Time for photos, fresh air and views too big to fit in a single frame.
- More than 500 Khibiny minerals and over 3,000 minerals from around the world.
- Crimson eudialyte (the 'drops of Sami blood'), golden astrophyllite and stones that glow in the dark.
- The story of how the Khibiny were settled and apatite mined.
- Optional: a café and gift shop. In winter — snow-tubing down the hill; at weekends — a fire show.
What's included in the price
Paid separately
Good to know
Your passport, cash, warm windproof clothing and comfortable shoes (it is chilly in the mountains and on the cable car even in summer), a hat, sunglasses, a power bank and money for lunch — it is not included in the price.
The tour is easy and suitable for people of any basic fitness level, including children and older travellers. You go up Mount Aikuaivenchorr on a comfortable gondola cable car, with no hiking involved. The walks at each location are short and over level ground.
Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Arkhangelsk, Kazan, Cherepovets and Minsk (Belarus).
The cable car depends on the weather and wind in the mountains, and in rare cases the resort may cancel the ride. If that happens, we will offer an alternative viewpoint over the Khibiny and adjust the programme so the day stays just as full.
No, lunch is paid separately. In the middle of the day we stop at one of Kirovsk's cosy restaurants, where you can eat to suit your taste and budget.
To book, just send a request through the form on the site, message us on Telegram or give us a call. We will get in touch, help you choose dates, discuss the details and hold your places once a small deposit is paid.
Reviews of this adventure:
Amazing trip! We went with Mikhail and it was all so warm and interesting. Lovely company and an equally lovely tour. None of that typical 'look left, look right' routine. A great, friendly atmosphere — I recommend it to everyone, photo attached :)
We went to Kirovsk with the Aurora Trip team in September. We loved everything about it. Fascinating stories — we learned so much. And of course the mountains! They are magnificent! The weather was superb. It was amazing to get such good weather in September; I thought it would be snowy. Next time we will go to Teriberka with the same team — but that will be in winter!
We went aurora hunting with the guys last year and loved the friendly vibe of the trip — as if a group of friends had gathered for a photo hunt. Alexandra shared all sorts of interesting scientific facts and legends, we talked and laughed a lot and had a wonderful time, and on top of it all we managed to catch the long-awaited aurora! The whole sky was glowing :) The team also knew where clouds are least likely, so our chances were high! I'm attaching a photo, but in real life it is far more mesmerising, with the whole glow shimmering in a bright dance — thank you, I definitely recommend it.
I went with friends last year and am only now getting round to writing a review. Huge thanks to the whole team of guides. It was wonderful! We visited Teriberka and it was the most memorable trip of my life! We also went aurora hunting. Our guide was Yan. We caught a beautiful aurora, and a special thank-you for the photos :)))
